From PE Quarterly Reports to a Single Dataset

Look-through is what every institutional investor wants from their private equity book: seeing through the funds, down to the underlying portfolio companies. Getting there is a data challenge, and it has three steps: extract, clean, validate.

Florian Garivier, CEO of Quantilia, walks through each of them in 20 minutes, following a single GP report from arrival to consolidated exposure.

850data providers connected
650quality checks per file
80data points per underlying company

Extraction is the easy part.

Getting numbers out of a GP PDF is the step everyone demonstrates, because it is the step that looks impressive. It is also the step that matters least on its own.

What decides whether those numbers are worth anything is what happens next: standardising formats that do not match, resolving inconsistencies, removing duplicates, then running the checks that catch what the extraction got wrong. An extracted figure that has not been validated is a wrong number that looks right, and that is more dangerous than a blank cell.

This session follows one GP report through all three steps, in order, and ends where look-through actually begins: line-by-line identification of the holdings in each fund, and consolidated exposure by country, sector and investment strategy.

Three steps to look-through

1

Extract

AI and text parsing pull structured data out of documents that were never designed for it: capital call amounts, dates and fees from GP notices, holdings from Excel forms, positions from investor portals. Up to 80 data points per underlying portfolio company.

2

Clean

Formats are standardised, inconsistencies resolved, duplicates removed. Every flow is typed: investment, fees, interest, return of capital, capital gain, recallable distribution. Asset classes are normalised across venture capital, infrastructure, private debt, real estate, and the long tail down to forests and art collections.

3

Validate

Up to 650 individual checks per file test the integrity and completeness of the data: inter-source reconciliation, discrepancy detection and automatic alerts. Anomalies are identified and corrected, and every figure stays clickable back to the page it came from.

Built for the teams who live with GP documents

  • Private equity and alternatives teams at pension funds, insurers and sovereign wealth funds
  • Funds of funds and multi-manager platforms that need lookthrough on underlying holdings
  • Middle and back office teams responsible for consolidated investor reporting
  • Risk, compliance and data teams who need private markets data their models can trust
  • Family offices consolidating liquid and private holdings across several banks

One GP report. Three steps. Full look-through.
